Pellet Stoves

Pellet Stoves - Inspection - Cleaning - Repair and PartsA pellet stove is a stove that burns compressed wood or biomass pellets to create a source of heat for residential and sometimes industrial spaces. By steadily feeding fuel from a storage container (hopper) into a burn pot area, they create a constant flame that requires little to no physical adjustments. Today’s central heating systems operated with wood pellets as a renewable energy source can reach an efficiency factor of more than 90%. » more info

Pellet Stoves – Maintenance

Pellet stoves require routine maintenance including an annual full cleaning . A properly cleaned and maintained pellet stove should not create creosote, the sticky, flammable substance that causes chimney fires. Pellets burn very cleanly and create only a layer of fine fly ash as a byproduct of combustion. The grade of pellet fuel affects the performance and ash output. Premium grade pellets produce less than one percent ash content, while standard or low grade pellets produce up to six percent ash. Pellet stove users should be aware of the extra maintenance required with a lower grade pellet, and that inconsistent wood quality can cause serious effects to the electronic machinery over a short period of time. Failure to perform this routine maintenance of ash removal will affect your pellet stove’s efficiency to transfer heat to your home. Without proper maintenance your stove may cease to drop pellets and/or burn properly. Burning a dirty stove for extended periods of time will become a safety concern.

Harman has an excellent Use & Care video series about their line of pellet stoves including this one on pellet stove maintenance. Please consult your pellet stove  manufacturer manual for specific maintenance procedures.

If your stove is not working properly and appears to be less efficient the good news is that a full service cleaning and inspection will most likely resolve those performance issues.  But there’s always the possibility that your stove may need a new part based on our service testing and diagnosis.

We do stock common parts but also order specific parts as needed. That includes heat sensors, glass, burn pots, fire brick and control boards. We charge a service call / inspection fee for diagnosing repairs. The return visit for the repair itself will have an hourly rate fee applied in addition to materials.

We will install new and used stoves with new pipe if the install is within my scope.

To my knowledge I’m the only one in town that mechanically / rotary sweeps the pellet flue if needed instead of using a hand held brush.  And, I use CO2 / Compressed air to clean out inaccessible parts of the stove that can not be reached with a brush or a vacuum.
